19 May 2018 – surely the most talked about date of the year so far.

For those of you who are not Chelsea or Manchester United supporters eagerly anticipating the FA Cup Final, you might have heard about a couple getting married in Windsor. In fact, if you’re living in the UK or the US, it would have been pretty much impossible to have missed the news of the impending royal wedding.

Whatever your views on the monarchy, it’s clear that an event garnering so much of the media’s attention is difficult to ignore for those of us in PR. As the recent royal baby news and Harry and Meghan’s engagement have already demonstrated, marketing professionals don’t like to let opportunities like this pass us by.

The danger is that – while I’d be the first to advocate tracking the news agenda to make sure the clients we represent are capitalising on current trends – the old adage that ‘all publicity is good publicity’ simply isn’t true. Getting on the bandwagon won’t work for everyone and firms would be wise to think twice before jumping in with both feet. I, for one, will be looking forward to seeing who wins and who loses in the battle of the wedding newsjack.
