Dream It Forward” is the motto of today’s International ‘World Dream Day’. The temptation may be to stay in bed all day but this is not what founder Ozioma Egwuonwu intended; rather the intention is to encourage individuals, families, schools, businesses and communities to take time to focus on their dreams and turn them into reality and, and by doing so, create positive change in the world.

Having dreams is so important – may they be personal dreams or goals for your company; perhaps shared goals with colleagues or business partners. Big dreams and goals give you an ideal you can pursue, which (hopefully) makes you a better version of yourself every day. My dream was to work in PR and marketing. Starting out in this area is hard though, and at times, to be honest, I nearly gave up but having now reached my goal, it feels like a dream come true.

Making dreams come true: goal-setting

With a goal – a vision – in mind, it’s important to think through what it will take to realise your dream, to have a plan and to make it work for you. Jeffrey Hayzlett, best-selling author, speaker and chairman of C-Suite Network, puts forward five ‘golden rules’ of goal-setting[1]:

  • Set goals that motivate you
  • Set SMART goals (Specific / Measurable / Attainable / Relevant / Time bound)
  • Write down your goals
  • Put a plan in action
  • Work the plan.

Setting and working to SMART goals is especially effective in the workplace. Effective goal-setting can improve employee engagement in a way that elevates performance and benefits business overall.

While researching Finn Partners for the job interview I looked up Peter Finn’s bio. The first thing I read was: “Finn Partners is the fulfillment of a dream.” That made me curious… what was the dream itself? It seems it was, “to create a firm with unbridled creativity, unwavering commitment to its clients, and also one of the best places to work in the industry.” In my short time here, I have found that this vision lives on in its people and its intention to be “different, bold, meaningful and amazing for clients, our colleagues and the community”.

By striving to be better every day; by working hard to achieve our goals we may strive to achieve our dreams, whatever they may be. The International Day could be the time to clarify your own dream; to work out an action plan to make it happen and to help others achieve their dreams too. Let’s dare to dream and to dream big!
