Step One for Professional Service and Financial Firms is Often to Step Back

We regularly work with professional service and financial firms that have grown organically over the years and even decades. These firms have largely attracted clients through word-of-mouth referrals stemming from exemplary work, exceptional client service and carefully cultivated relationships.

Inevitably they reach a point where an important decision has to be made: continue organic growth (which is comfortable but can have diminishing returns) or take a more systematic approach to growth by extending visibility through a dedicated strategic communications program directed at target clients/customers.

For us, this is where the fun starts.

Where Do Snaps Come From?

Toward the end of 2014, a friend over at PR News had asked if I'd be interested in speaking at their June 2015 PR News Digital PR Conference in Miami. Miami during hurricane season wasn't so appealing, but as a natural born schmoozer, I jumped at the chance to mix and mingle with people interested and engaged in the social/digital space.

Data and Creativity

Not so long ago, if you asked me to describe my best professional attributes, I might say “attention to detail” and “work ethic”. My strengths have evolved because my job demanded it. Social research and analysis is a young field that’s changing as new social channels emerge and older ones transform. This shifting digital landscape requires me to be more creative and entrepreneurial than I’ve ever been.

The New Face of Twitter Search

Earlier this month, my eyes were delighted when I noticed a change in the design of Twitter's Search interface. Much sleeker, and much more intuitive, the new design is really great. I've been tweeting since 2009 and social media is my meal ticket, so while I am very familiar with Twitter, I also really appreciate this change in design direction.

Best of Breed Data Approach: Bottlenose Nerve Center

The Finn Partners Insights Team deals in data, and it’s my favorite part of the job. But that data doesn’t mean anything if we can’t turn it into useful intelligence that can improve the effectiveness of social and digital media activities. There are a lot of tools, but they all have different capabilities, different strengths and weaknesses, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Rather than use just one tool, our team relies on a variety of different products to best meet client needs. This week I put Bottlenose Nerve Center to the test on a sample topic.

The Rise of the Livestream

Livestreaming isn't new, and so when I first heard of Meerkat around spring - which I affectionately just call SXSW season at this point- I was in no rush to download the app. It wasn't until I heard rumblings about Twitter getting peeved with Meerkat's use of its platform that I decided to check it out. And, with my luck, this all happened right around the time when Twitter upped its defense, cut off access to its API, and launched a competitive platform called Periscope.

The Joys of Project Management

There's so much industry chatter about the importance of a mentor in the workplace -- which I wholeheartedly agree with -- but I'd almost go as far as to argue that working with a real-life PM is as important as having a mentor. How are you supposed to focus on professional development when you're drowning deep into the depths of account service and management?

My secret? Neby Ejigu. If you're wondering what's so special about Neby, you probably haven't crossed paths with him yet. He's the Director of Production at Finn Partners. Not sure what that means? In a nutshell, it means that he is the neck that turns the head. Neby oversees a team of digital PMs to ensure that all projects -- including internal collaborations with account teams -- run smoothly.
