Maria De Varenne
I worked for more than 30 years as a journalist and editor, leading newsrooms in Southern California and Tennessee. My professional and managerial experience with Gannett and Belo includes strategic multi-media product start-ups, market and audience expansions and innovative staff development. I managed day-to-day newsroom operations in competitive markets, most recently as the executive editor of The Tennessean from 2011 to 2022. During my tenure, The Tennessean won numerous state, national and international news awards including being named one of the top U.S. daily newspapers to gain audiences in both digital and print readership. Before moving to Nashville, I was editor and vice president of news of The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, California, from 1999 to 2011. I led an award-winning newsroom with more than 325 staff in 11 offices. I am a graduate of the University of New Mexico, was a Knight Digital Media Center Fellow at the University of Southern California, and serve on several boards and foundations.
Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while… you don’t do things right once in a while… you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit.- Vince Lombardi
