Every year in the U.S., nearly 400 children under the age of 15 drown in a swimming pool or spa and it is the leading cause of accidental death in children 1-4 years old. Yet drownings are 100 percent preventable. To help educate parents, caregivers, pool owners and the pool and spa industry, Finn Partners conceptualized, developed and continues to execute the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Pool Safely campaign. This multi-faceted, research-based public education campaign aims to reduce child drownings and ensure that everyone is safer around the water.
Since 2010, the Finn Partners-led campaign has assembled a coalition of nearly 900 national and community partners, distributed over a million pieces of educational materials (everything from mini-beach balls to educational brochures to temporary tattoos), aired nearly two billion broadcast PSAs and garnered nearly a billion media impressions all in the name of water safety. The campaign is reaching out directly to kids – the population most vulnerable to drowning – through new and innovative ways, including an iPhone and Android app (the first kid-friendly water safety app released by the federal government) and a song written and recorded by popular children’s recording artist Laurie Berkner. More importantly, child drownings in U.S. pools and spas decreased by 12 percent from 2012 to 2014 and there have been zero drain entrapment deaths in public pools since enactment of the law.
