We are all more than the sum of our roles in the workplace; for example, I’m a husband, a father, a student, a martial artist and a gym-goer etc. We all have pieces like these that make up our identity and they all come with daily tasks and responsibilities. If we’re too consumed with our work, we could eventually become negligent in the other parts of our lives that make us whole.

The elders in my family recall the time when employee wellbeing was not a focus for the employer; when boring offices and long hours of arduous work came without benefit and at the detriment of one’s family and hobbies. In recent years there has been a push towards maintaining employee wellbeing, achieving a work-life balance and making careers work around people’s lives in a way that maximises benefit to both the employees and the business.

As a result, we’ve seen technology enable the rise of enterprise mobility. Enterprise mobility describes the trend of a greater number of employees working outside the office and using mobile devices and cloud services to perform business tasks. Its convenience helps us stay in touch and on track when we’re travelling on business. I benefit by working from home once a week, which gives me back a few hours in the day that would otherwise be spent commuting and enables me to be around my wife and twin baby boys more.

Thanks to technology the future of work is changing – with 71 percent of business enterprises believing that mobility is a top priority, according to a global survey, and 63 percent thinking mobility is the most significant factor in gaining competitive advantage, it is clear that both businesses and employees benefit from this growing trend. In addition, the global enterprise mobility market is also expected to bring in $240 billion in revenue in 2020 according to Mobile Business Insights — a testimony that describes its growing potential for years to come.

It is clear that the future of the workplace is changing – employees are increasingly able to balance work with their family life and hobbies, which can lead to happier and more fulfilled staff and more productive workers overall.
